running anki without installing it has been discussed many times - in this forum and other places. This is not officially supported but there are multiple reports that it works for users. You could start with a search of this forum for "portable windows" or "Running from Flash drive". I guess it's better to get the answers in context than just a few lines here. This has also been discussed multiple times in the anki subreddit.

this is a community section. I'm just a regular user. I can't close (but you can).

Before you do: Does it work?

    If not:

    • Which guide do you use?
    • Which steps did you take?
    • Where exactly do you fail or get unexpected results. Any error messages?

    Hi,

I did not try yet: I'm teacher and the new school year is beginning. If
there were a straight forward solution I would have use it with wy student.
There I will have to seek and test, so I plan to do it on my next holiday.

I will respond here if a good solution comes up.

Thank's a lot for the link. Starting from there, the IT could find an
package designed for opsi software installation that is official and
allowed to be installed. So I did not try the instruction in the manual.

I propose to leave your post here to inform others.

    Have a nice day

    Hi!
using the help from the manual, built-in methods and a tool from Microsoft Technet, I did my own portable .exe this way:

create a powershell File (.ps1) with this content:
    cmd /c "start /b anki.exe -b %~dp0\ankidata"

and thus is not limited to a drive letter (because the file itself is in base folder (from there, using the anki.exe ; the %~dp0 is also referencing to the folder of the file executed)

the ps1 file can be converted to .exe (which is more comfortable in PortableApps Platform) with this PS2EXE Script (tested in MS technet):
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/PS2EXE-GUI-Convert-e7cb69d5

I attach my .exe in a .7z file here

    best regards,
    David
