Import of txt fails on Mac displays unknown file format despite being UTF 8

I am trying to import the tab delimited attatched UTF 8 formated txt file. However anki won't let me. I am using the english version on a mac.

    The file is in UTF-16, not UTF-8. Please see http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#spreadsheets-and-utf-8

    Thank you, I had told TextEdit to save it as UTF-8 but you are right that it did not.

    I had already checked what you linked to and the forum discussion and it wasn't much help.

    This was the solution:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/539294/how-do-i-determine-file-encoding-in-osx

    specifically:

    > file -I {filename}
    to determine encoding
    and then
    > iconv -f utf-16le -t utf-8 file1.txt > file2.txt
    to force it to be utf-8
