I've lost my recent review history

I reset 1 of my decks that I needed to learn in great detail for an upcoming exam. Once I had finished reviewing it, I returned to my list of decks where I found that all of my decks had been reset. All of the reset cards still have their review history, except for my reviews of the last 2-3 days.

There were 2 exceptions:
1 of the decks I worked with earlier that day had no changes
another deck I worked with earlier that day had a partial resetting; the review history on these cards doesn't show any of my reviews for the last few days

Most important to me - how can I avoid this from happening again.?
Secondly, if I can recover the lost review history (merge a backup with my current session (?)) that would be much appreciated!

I suspect you accidentally selected something besides the current deck, as
this should not happen normally. You can restore from a backup as mentioned
in http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#backups. (If you've added new cards
since the last time you opened/closed Anki or synced, you can export those
cards to an apkg file before restoring, then import the apkg into the
restored collection to avoid losing them.)
